Frequently Asked Questions

Nature based solutions are strategies that leverage natural processes and ecosystems to combat climate change, enhance resilience, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By restoring forests, wetlands, and coastal areas, these solutions help sequester carbon, manage water resources, and protect biodiversity, all while addressing critical environmental, social, and economic challenges.

The four pillars of nature based solutions are:

  • Land: Utilizes forests, grasslands, and wetlands to sequester carbon, enhance biodiversity, and provide ecosystem services like water purification and soil stabilization.
  • Rock: Focuses on using minerals and rocks to capture and store carbon through processes like enhanced weathering, where certain types of rock absorb CO2 from the atmosphere.
  • Ocean: Leverages marine ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrasses, and seaweed cultivation to sequester carbon, support marine biodiversity, and protect coastal areas.
  • Construction: Involves integrating carbon storage into building materials like biochar, carbon-storing concrete, and sustainably sourced timber to lock away carbon and enhance urban green spaces.

Common examples include reforestation, wetland restoration, green roofs and walls in urban areas, and mangrove restoration to prevent flooding and capture carbon.

NBS utilises nature's existing adaptational mechanisms to address climate issues. For example, instead of building a high-tech, expensive dam that disrupts the ecosystem, mangroves can be restored to prevent flooding in a similar capacity.

You can participate by supporting local NBS projects, advocating for green policies, volunteering for conservation efforts, practicing sustainable living, and collaborating with local organizations and authorities. You can also become an NBS entrepreneur and start a venture to help address climate change through NBS!

Challenges include securing funding, overcoming policy and regulatory hurdles, raising public awareness, ensuring technical feasibility. This website aims to address part of that! We aim to raise awareness and show that it is feasible both ecologically, technically and financially to be successful with NBS.

Nature based solutions are important because they provide sustainable and cost-effective ways to enhance resilience, mitigate climate change, support biodiversity, and improve human well-being while delivering multiple co-benefits for communities and economies.
